These aren’t raccoons, they’re raccoon dogs! Also known as Tanukis! Or, in Super Mario Bros. 3, “Tanookis.” They’re natives to Asia and Japanese myths describe them as tricksters and illusionists! One Japanese story is about a tanuki who cheats a merchant by paying for goods with leaves he magically transformed into paper money. Animal Crossing players have probably figured out by now that Tom Nook is a tanuki! He transforms furniture into leaves so you can take it home in your pocket!

I am very embarrassed to admit that I did not realize the Tanooki suit was based on tanukis and not raccoons, that Tom Nook is a tanuki, or that there was any significance to the fact that furniture in Animal Crossing converts to leaves you can carry in your pockets. Shameful.
